Proteus vulgaris is a gram-negative bacterium found in the human intestinal tract and in environment habitats, including long-term care facilities and hospitals. Patients in these facilities with underlying diseases or compromised immune systems are the most at risk for infection. P vulgaris is resistant to ampicillin and first-generation cephalosporins.
