Moraxella catarrhalis is a gram negative diplococcus that commonly colonizes the upper respiratory tract, particularly in children, and causes infections of the respiratory system, middle ear (acute otitis media in children), eye, central nervous system, and joints.  It causes a range of diseases from acute and chronic sinusitis in all ages and lower respiratory infection in adults with chronic lung disease. It most commonly affects pediatrics and immunocompromised patients, but can also exacerbate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults.  It can also cause inflammation of the mucous membranes in the airways, known as catarrhalis inflammation.
