Staphylococcus aureus is a gram positive coccal bacterium which is normal flora of the skin, nose and respiratory tract. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common species of Staphylococcus to cause Staph infections. It can cause a range of illnesses from minor skin infections to abscess and cellulitis due to complications of diabetes or surgical site infections. Strains of S. aureus can host bacteriophages that can produce Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL), increasing virulence of Staph.
