Proteus mirabilis is a gram-negative bacterium found in the human intestinal tract and in soil and water. It is a common cause of community-acquired infections. P. mirabilis is the most common bacterium isolated from wound infections from the Proteus species. It is not susceptible to nitrofurantoin or tetracycline and has experienced increasing drug resistance to ampicillin, trimethoprim, and ciprofloxin.
