Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA parvovirus. Bocavirus is a new viral genus with three strains identified to date. It is a probable cause of lower respiratory tract infections and has been linked to gastroenteritis. Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) has been frequently detected by PCR in the upper airways of young children hospitalized with upper or lower respiratory tract illness (URTI, LRTI). Bocavirus is often a co-infection and research is ongoing to better determine its role in human infections.
