Chlamydia pneumoniae is a gram negative, obligate intracellular bacterium which is a common cause of atypical pneumonia and other acute respiratory diseases. Chlamydia pneumoniae is a common cause of pneumonia in otherwise healthy individuals. Each year, there are approximately 500,000 cases of Chlamydia pneumonia associated pneumonia hospitalizations in the US. C. pneumoniae infection may be associated with atherosclerotic vascular disease. Possible associations with Alzheimer's disease, asthma, and reactive arthritis have been proposed.
