Escherichia coli is an anaerobic gram-negative bacterium found in the intestine. Infection is usually a result of fecal contamination of external wounds or from trauma to the intestinal tract, such as surgical wounds. E. coli strains have been isolated from foot ulcers and decubitus as well. E. coli exhibits antibiotic resistance to ampicillin, tetracycline and fluoroquinolones.
