Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium that can live harmlessly in the body of healthy persons. If infection does occur, it can be in different parts of the body and is much more difficult to treat because of MRSA's resistance to many antibiotics. It occurs most frequently in persons who have been hospitalized or spent time in other health care settings, nursing homes and those with weakened immune systems. Healthcare-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) infections are associated with invasive procedures or devices during surgery. Community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) infects healthy individuals such as child care workers and those who live in crowded conditions. Staph is one of the most common causes of skin infections, however for the infected immunocompromised, it can lead to serious problems like infected wounds or pneumonia.
